Crooked River - May 8th, 2010
- Recorded:
- 58 ° F
- Fishing: Fair
It's good to see the water coming back in shape after the runoff. We are under 500 cfs and it looks like it is dropping more, but I like the level for fishing now too. Normal summer flows are around 200 cfs.
The fish are close to the banks and feeding on BWO nymphs and dries, midges, scuds and especially mothers day caddis larva in the case (Hares Ear, Prince or Peeking Caddis). The BIG Mothers Day caddis hatch is getting close...stay tuned, we'll let you know when the blizzard begins.

Crooked River - April 16th, 2010
- Recorded:
- 66 ° F
- Fishing: Poor
Water is very high and pretty much unfishable. GIve it a week and check back.
Crooked River - March 10th, 2010
- Recorded:
- 48 ° F
- Fishing: Good
Most days are producing good BWO hatches along with midges. WHen the hatch isn't on we've had good fishing with Nymphs under an indicator or trailed behind an attactor dry. Water conditions are very nice and I don't anticipate seeing high water this spring with such a low snowpack.
Crooked River - January 26th, 2010
- Recorded:
- 42 ° F
- Fishing: Good
I will rate the Crooked as the best (read most consistent) winter fishery so far this year. We are seeing good midge activity and consistent nymph fishing with small bead heads. The water is low so fish the nymph close to your indicator for better detection or drop the nymph off of a dry fly about 18 to 24 inches and fish it along the edges and rocks and in pools.
Some dry fly options exist, mainly with emerging or adult midges later in the afternoon.
Scuds and Wooly Buggers are also good flies for the Crooked River now.

Crooked River - November 25th, 2009
- Recorded:
- 45 ° F
- Fishing: Good
The fishing is good right now. Look for midge hatches in the late afternoons that will bring fish up to the surface.
Otherwise, fish a beer head baetis or Flashback PT and an egg or midge pupa with a small strike indicator 1 to 3 feet from the fly.
Wooly Buggers or leech patterns on a swing can be productive and worth a try during the slow times.
We are in a great late November weather pattern. It is warm and sunny at the moment. Don't know how long that will last with December coming?

Crooked River - October 14th, 2009
- Recorded:
- 50 ° F
- Fishing: Great
The irrigation season is over at the Crooked River and the river has dropped from 200 cfs to about 80 cfs. This stacks the fish up!
BWO hatches are awesome right now. Plenty of other stuff to consider too, including midges, scuds, leeches, october caddis and of course tons of nymphing opportunities.
As I write this report it is raining but the weather looks good after today.
