Metolius River - July 17th, 2010
  • Recorded:
  • Sunny

  • Fishing: Great
Between me and the other shop guys and regualr Metolius friends I have to say we just ended what was one heck of a good week of catching fish. The neat thing is the catch was spread out between all of us from the Headwater area down below Bridge 99 a little and were caught on all sorts of stuff. Here is the list: PMD's, Blue Wing Olives, Golden Stone dries and Nymphs, Comparaduns, Soft Hackle PT's and Rusty Spinner's. Probably more than that, but that is what I remember from the week. No doubt it will be all the same bugs for the next several weeks!
Yes, Bull Trout fishing is good and streamers are taking some excellent fish.

The Green Drake hatch looks like it is finally going to get real for the 2010 season. I was on the river Thursday and the hatch was strong from 3:45 to 5. PMD's and Caddis are also hot now.
Golden Stone Nymphs are awesome with a small dropper. The best 3 droppers include Copper John, Juju PMD and Batman.

Last Week we saw high and off colored water in our favorite river, and if you know the Metolius you know that is unusual for this spring creek. But the mountain rains and the highest freezing levels of the year did a number to the tributaries that run out of the mountains. I fished the river on Thursday and had a good afternoon in the eddies on PMD's. We went looking for Drakes and found almost none.
Matt just got off the river and had a good evening fishing PMD's and caddis.
The Drake hatch is off to a slow start. The 3rd week of May looked promising but since then it has been a trickle at best....but it will happen and it will be soon so stay tuned.
Golden Stone nymphs are fantastic right now with a dropper of a green or red copper john, angel case emerger, juju or serendipity just to name a few favorites.
Bull Trout fishing is slow. It will pick up again as more fish migrate up from the Reservoir in July. You can catch resident fish now on a streamer or nymph.

Not a ton of Green Drakes yet, but enough to call an official start to the 2010 hatch. Most of the GD action is below the hatchery still.
PMD hatches are really prolific. Lot's of bugs on the water but the fish are tough to fool. I picked up 2 yesterday on #18 Cahill's but also rose fish on Knock Down Duns, Comparadun's and a Hilda's Spring Creek Emerger.
Small Stone Nymphs are good with a dropper.
The entire river is now open.

The Drakes are sputtering to a start for the 2010 season. 2 days ago was really good.
PMD's and Caddis can also be important hatches.
Nymphs are still king! Match the nymph to the abov hatches and also fish a bunch of Golden Stone Nymphs.

  • Partly cloudy

The first sigthings of Green Drakes have been coming in the last few days.
PMD's have also started rolling for the season.
BWO's are still important.
Golden Stone Nymphs with a dropper are working very well. The little Golden Kaufmann Stone is one of the best nymphs at the moment.
