Metolius River - September 25th, 2009
  • Recorded:
  • Sunny
  • 83 ° F
  • Fishing: Excellent
Still amazing. Green Drakes and Flav's, PMD, blue wing olives, mahogany duns, 4 types of caddis, little olive stones, yellow sally and golden stones are all hatching. sometimes at the same time which is a puzzle to figure out which fly the fish are eating on any given afternoon. Tons of bull trout in the system now, with kokanee just migrating up this week. We can expect to see them by the tens of thousands in the next 2 weeks spread out between the lake and the headwaters. That means aggresive Bull Trout and plenty of eggs in the drift for the trout.

  • Mostly sunny

  • Fishing: Great
The Fall Green Drakes are just starting. We saw the first hatch on 9/1/09 of just a few duns, but I prdict by the weekend that we will see a full fledged Green Drake hatch.
Little olive stones dominate the hatch window now. PMD, Baetis and Caddis (Olive #16, Tan #14-16, Black #18-20) are all important too.

  • Partly cloudy

The hatch of little olive stones has began. This can provide some very good surface activity but can lead to some frustrating fishing. Gotta love the Metolius.
PMD, BWO, Caddis, Yellow Sallies, Golden Stones, and a  few Salmonflies are all very important in their various stages too.
We have not seen Fall Green Drakes yet, but I'll keep you posted!
Bull Trout fishing is fair. It will improve very soon. Try Streamers or a Big Double Bead Peacock with a little red chironomid or lightning bug ad a trailing fly.

The Golden Stone hatch is still going well. You'll find GS's in the upper river from the Headwaters to Gorge Campground and a few down below. This is the time of year we see Willow Flies wich is a huge Salmonfly sized stonefly. They are often a dirty tan underbelly but sometimes they look really gray. You'll see these all over the river but especially around the hatchery. Other stones to keep an eye out for include Yellow Sally and little Olive Stone. The Little Olive Stone will become very important from now to fall.
PMD cripples, emergers and adults as well as Rusty Spinners are really important. Blue Wing Olive's and a size #14 Serratella Mayfly are showing up in fishable hatches daily.
Caddis continue to hatch but are inconsistent. Don't be without some caddis pupa and emerger patterns on any evening you plan on being on the water from 4 PM to Dark. Expect Caddis to pick up again around Labor Day and stay strong through Mid-October or longer if we have a warm fall.
Bull Trout are coming up to the Creeks to spawn so there are a number of them in the river prior to the spawning run. This is a great time to fish for them. Try Streamers and Nymphs.

As usual the fish don't come easy here but I call it the best Cat & Mouse game in Oregon.
PMD's, BWO's, Serratella, Yellow Sally, Golden Stone, Caddis are all important in every stage.
Remember the Metolius fish love cripples and emergers.
Fish a long light leader and douse your dry flies in Dry Shake.
Bull Trout fishing is improving this time of year, but we are still 6 weeks away from post-spawn when they ae in the upper river in great numbers and really hungry. Try a Big Double Bead Stone with a Red Ice Cream Cone as a trailer, or a streamer! Nymphing is best at the moment.
