Metolius River - April 12th, 2008
FISHING: Good
This spring fed river stays around 47-52 degrees year round and it fishes like a spring creek! Averaging 1-3 fish an hour is the norm. Have patience... it takes quality time on the water to get a feel for this river's complex character. Patience will eventually lead to fishing success. This is a stalking trout stream, casting from your knees and from behind bushes to hide yourself from fish will help out--alot. Wading often spooks fish, so take your time. If you can hit the spot without getting in the river, you are already ahead of the game.
The key to fishing the Metolius in spring is timing. If the weather is sunny and stable, the Metolius can have prolific BWO and midge hatches and fish will rise to well presented dry flies. I have been seeing PMDs and caddis too. If it is wintery, cloudy and cold, the fish can get sulky so you will have to nymph to get a shot at a beautiful native redside. The majority of the huge Bull Trout from Lake Billy Chinook have moved back down to the lake but the resident Bulls are always available. Often these carnivorous char are easy to spot in deep pools and tailouts.
FROM ALLINGHAM BRIDGE UPSTREAM TO THE HEADWATERS IS CLOSED AND REOPENS MAY 25.
DRIES: CDC Baetis, midges, small green / black stoneflies, cynigmula, black / dark brown caddis. NYMPHS: Batman, green rock worm, serendipity, golden stone nymph, October caddis nymph, assorted mayfly nymphs as listed above. BULL TROUT: the biggest and heaviest streamer you got!

Deschutes River - Lower - April 12th, 2008
FISHING: Fair
Although trout fishing is tough this time of year due to seasonal closures I think it is worth the effort. Warmer days are seeing alot more hatches and fish activity. See flies and locales listed below.
STEELHEAD are getting set to spawn and this can carry through spring. I tell folks to leave em alone this time of year especially Macks Canyon all the way up to Warm Springs. We want to ensure good future runs. Besides, they are pretty dark and lazy and not much fun since most have been in fresh water for over six months.
Please be aware of spawnig beds... it may be tempting to wade out to redds that have fish spawning -- BUT if you want the Deschutes to continue being a blue ribbon trout stream AND great steelhead fishery, respect the beautiful Steelies, trout, and precious few Chinook. We all want our great-grandkids to enjoy this river, don't we ?
THE RIVER IS CLOSED TO ALL ANGLING FROM THE NORTHERN BOUNDARY OF THE WARM SPRINGS INDIAN RESERVATION ALL THE WAY UP TO THE DAM. OPENING DAY IS IN APRIL IS APRIL 26.
DRIES: BWOs, midges, little black stone, black / tan caddis, March browns. NYMPHS: Copper John, soft hackles, peasant tail, serendipity, prince, green rock worm, stonefly nymphs, October caddis nymphs, wooly buggers (on sinking line!!).

Crooked River - April 12th, 2008
FISHING: Poor
At the time of this report, the Crooked was over 500 cfs... to high to fish. April and early May are often times of high water here as Prineville Resivoir begins to fill up and water is let out of the dam. Keep an eye on water levels. 50 - 350 cfs is optimal, if the river is above 400 cfs, wait until it drops to head out there.
The canyon is beautiful and the scenery alone is worth the trip out here. When dryfly fishing, concentrate on the riffles. When nymph fishing, concentrate on the deeper holes.
DRIES: Adams, Purple comparadun, BWOs, midges, caddis
NYMPHS: Scuds, midges, caddis larvae, serendipity, brassie, prince, wooly buggers.

Fall River - April 12th, 2008
FISHING: Good
The banks are pretty much clear of snow now, so access on the Fall is greeat.
Native and hatchery rainbows, mountain whitefish, and a few migratory Deschutes Browns call the Fall home. BWOs, midges, and a few caddis are prominent. Attractor patterns can be good too. Swinging small wooly buggers can get you a 20+" fish. Make sure you check out "The Tubes," the hatchery area, and around the campground. Stealthy fishermen do the best. Its best to hit the the Fall when the sun is out and the weather is stable.
THE PORTION OF THE RIVER BELOW THE FALLS IS CLOSED AND REOPENS MAY 24.
DRIES: BWO cripple, midges, little green / black stone, caddis, Coachman, Purple haze NYMPHS: BWOs, small stoneflie nymphs, #20 red and black midge patterns, hares ear, green rock worm, wooly buggers

McKenzie River - April 12th, 2008
FISHING: Good
Keep an eye on water levels--westside rains can blow out the Upper McK in a heartbeat. If you don't have a boat, it is tough to fish because of the seasonal closure and private land.
However, reports are good from the McK with March Browns dominating the water cooler talk. Caddis and BWOs round out the major hatches. Nymphing with Green Drake nymphs and Stonefly nymphs with small droppers can be very productive when the fish are not rising.
Winter steelies are available below Leaburg Dam but time is running out on these guys.
ALL WATER ABOVE BLUE RIVER IS CLOSED AND REOPENS APRIL 26.
DRIES: BWOs, Green stimi, Purple Haze, Green Caddis, Yellow Comparadun, Coachman, Renegade, march browns NYMPHS: Ocotber Caddis, Stoneflies, Copper John, Prince, P.T., green rock worm, soft hackles, green serendipity, green drake nymphs
STEELIES: A-leech (purple, black), MOAL leach, bright winter patterns work well.

South Santiam River - April 12th, 2008
FISHING: Good
Well, the gear guys are begining to hook fish in the lower sections of the river. Soooo, I suspect us fly-guys will be hooking fish anytime now.
You really need a boat to fish this river as there is very limitted public bank access and those spots are generally loaded with bait-chuckers.
I have never had an issue with the gear-guys as they tend to stick to the deep holes.
Flies: big, bright, and heavy.

North Umpqua River - April 12th, 2008
FISHING: Good
Winter run steelies are in the Fly-Only water... head on down !
The fishing has been spotty lately and the river is running high due to all the snow in the Cascades, however, it will only pick up from here. April is usually the peak month for winter run Steelies. Keep an eye on river levels.
Make sure you bring heavy sink tips (Type III, Type 8, and some T-14) as the fish tend to hang tight to the riverbed. The North Umpqua has a confusing array of special regulations so be sure to consult the ODFW regulations are give us a call.
Flies: Winter hope, Green Butt Skunk, A-leaches, Silver Hilton. Oftentimes Deschutes flies work here... but bigger... like size 2 to 2 / 0.

Sisters Oregon Area - Small Streams - April 12th, 2008
FISHING: Fair
We have several small creeks near Sisters. Small water, small fish but usually you can have Wychus Creek to yourself!
However, spring run off will blow small creeks out quickly.

Sisters Oregon Area - Lakes - April 12th, 2008
FISHING: Poor
The snow and ice hatch on the high lakes have been tremedous lately... the real hatches will begin after the snow is gone.
Additionally, it might be a late season on the high lakes due to heavy snows this winter. Mt. Bachelor has had over 500 inches of snow this year!
